Beer, Cats, and Running – Celebrating Life’s Good Things with Beer

May 10, 2010

This past weekend was one chock full o’ landmark life events. What’s the best way to celebrate? With good friends and a beer, of course.Life Event #1 – Meow.  That’s right.  I adopted a cat (Katarina is her name) from the ASPCA (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals).  The time had come to give a lonely cat a home.  Of course, Katrina is a real cat and, contrary to popular belief, was not found while I was farming on FarmVille.  I guess Sarah McLachlan did her job well in all those damn commercials.

So what am I doing right now?  Drinking one of my homebrewed Fat Tire clones.  It’s pretty much my Yuengling Lager in the west.  Not necessarily equivalent because it’s an amber ale, it’s synonymous merely due to the fact that it is an extremely well balanced (not to hoppy and not too alcoholic beer) ubiquitous beer that is essentially a great anytime beer when bars or restaurants may not have the best selection.  At least, when I was in Portland, OR, that seemed to be the case.

I discovered the beer because of the persistent insistence from the lovely Andrea.  Of course, the sad thing is you can’t really get any east of the Mississippi River, and that is truly a shame.

Life Event #2 – Ouch.  I finished my first 50k this weekend.  The North Face Endurance Challenge.  It consisted of running and climbing (repeat about 50 times) up a mountainous trail situated in and around Bear Mountain for approximately 7 hours and 44 minutes.

So what do you drink when your body is torn to pieces from head to toe? Why not a Rogue Russian Imperial Stout. This fine stout is basically an amped up version of your regular stout (think Guiness) with an alcohol level that is somewhat masked by the sweet chocolate like taste. With an ABV of >11%, it’s a great sipping beer that I enjoyed at the Blind Tiger Ale House, one of the best bars in New York City, located in the West Village. It pretty much sipped away the pain in my legs as I spent a lovely day with some good company.

[Begin aside] According to the Blind Tiger Ale House’s website, I counted 28 draft beers, with current beers from great breweries such as Rogue, Smuttynose, Ommegang, and Bear Republic.  They, of course, rotate their draft selection often to incorporate other great breweries like Green Flash (one of my favorite West Coast breweries).  It is located in the West Village at 281 Bleecker Street and has a nice small woody feel to itself with lots of seating for a somewhat small space.  They do serve small plates and sandwiches.

Unfortunately, because of it’s awesomeness, it’s pretty much crowded all the time, except at odd hours. And, one more thing. Their bottle list is quite nice with an even wider selection of beer. [End aside]

Ahh, beer.  It fits into my life so nicely.

Does your kitty drink beer? Maybe she would enjoy a tripel?
