Brooklyn, You Rock – Franklin Park in Crown Heights

May 31, 2010

What lovely outdoor seating!

Crown Heights, it’s the next Williamsburg.  Take a walk on the north side of Franklin Avenue and you’ll forget where you are.  Be that good or bad, Franklin Park is THE bar to go to in Crown Heights.  Good beer + a heterogeneous crowd + outdoor seating + a new fancy burger shop = a spankin’ good time.  Located in Crown Heights, Franklin Park is definitely a destination watering hole for any beer or bar lover.  Read on.

Crown Heights is a gritty and lively part of Brooklyn that has seen some pretty good growth in terms of new businesses opening up.  Coming to the area will be a noodle and dumpling shop, a fancy schmancy pizza shop, and most likely other Williamsburg-esque type places.  Enter Franklin Park and more recently Dutch Boy Burger, the associated burger joint oh so conveniently attached to the bar itself.

Franklin Park boasts three areas to hang, two inside portions (I think one is only open on the weekends), and an outside seating area filled with tables and picnic benches.  All of these fit conveniently into what was once an auto repair shop, creating that garage like vibe that every beer lover enjoys in their neighborhood bar.

The beer selection and pricing is game by my standards.  I’ve had the joy of drinking such beers as: Harviestoun Old Engine Oil, Coney Island Lager, Rogue Dead Guy Ale, Chimay, Pork Slap Pale Ale, Dog Days Lager and many other obviously hand selected beers.  The owner sure knows his beer.  Don’t you think?

Because of the now officially attached Dutch Boy Burger, the Bring-Your-Own-Food policy is out the door.  Luckily, Dutch Boy provides some pretty standard offerings in terms of decent burgers and other food.  So, not all is lost.

There is not much more to say than this place is a care free good time. Go here the next time you don’t know what to do when you’re lost in Brooklyn.  Better yet, just ditch your plans this coming weekend and enjoy the beautiful weather.

Where is this place? 618 St. Johns Place, Brooklyn NY

I would like this bar if:

  • Beer garden type places are the bomb
  • I live in Crown Heights and am looking for some fancy burgers and good beer
  • Laid back crowd sounds good to me

I would not like this bar if:

  • It’s too much work to get my vaccinations required for entering Brooklyn
  • Gentrification is bad, very bad
  • More than $5 for a burger, what!?
