Well It’s Not That Cold in NYC – So Drink a River Horse Belgian Freeze

February 9, 2012

I am not entirely sure about my fascination with River Horse, a brewery based out in Lambertville, New Jersey. It could be that I like the little hippopotamus they use as part of their brand. Or, it could be closely correlated with the fact that my local grocery store, Pioneer, carries their beers. Who knows?

On my last visit to my post work beer selection, despite the air temperature nearing that of 50 degrees in this freakishly warm New York City winter, I decided I’d try River Horse Belgian Freeze.

Advertised as a Belgian-style winter ale, Belgian Freeze appears to be a Belgian Strong Dark Ale, at least from what I could see, smell and taste.

It’s a not able to see through dark brown, smells like stone fruits and some spicy aroma, and tastes Belgian. Frankly, it reminds me a bit of Brooklyn’s Local 2 just a little less intense and maybe a little bit less awesome. Still, if you’re looking for small bottles of good Belgian beers that come at a lower price than some actual Belgian’s then this may be a good place to start.

I would like this beer if –
(1) I want a six pack of Belgian-style beers for around $12-$15 (bought single bottles but would imagine the price would hit around this point
(2) New Jersey represent
(3) Eddy Merckx represent

I would not like this beer if –
(1) I don’t like stronger beers
(2) I don’t like complex beers
(3) I like the quality of higher priced Belgian and/or Belgian-style beers
